Before Buying A Futures Prop Firm Challenge

A source-aware checklist for checking payout gates, drawdown behavior, consistency, costs, news rules, and plan fit before buying a futures prop firm challenge.

Last checked 2026-05-07 Official sources reviewed
  • Confirm the firm, account type, account stage, and current rule version.
  • Check whether the main loss rule is a hard account-failure rule or a trading pause.
  • Check whether consistency blocks payout access, evaluation progress, or both.
  • Check payout cadence before comparing account size or headline price.
  • Check activation, reset, data, monthly, and commission assumptions before buying.
  • Check news, overnight, platform, micro/mini, and copy-trading restrictions when relevant.
  • Check what happens after the first payout before treating payout as usable buffer.
  • Use only current official sources for account-specific terms and dashboard notices.
Buying gates

Check rule consequence before price

Checked 2026-05-07
Apex 50% using largest profitable trading day / total net profit

The payout request option may be unavailable while the account remains active.

Topstep $0

After the first payout, the account balance remaining above $0 is the practical survival buffer under this worksheet assumption.

True cost Stage first

Activation, reset, data, and commission checks only matter after the account type is clear.

MyFundedFutures checks

Plan changes the buying decision

  • Minimum trading days: 2 days. Evaluation-stage requirements should be separated from funded payout plan checks.
  • Activation fee field: $0. Activation and account-status steps should be checked before applying funded path assumptions.
  • News trading window: No open positions or orders 2 minutes before and after data releases. Restricted T1 accounts listed in the current field model: Rapid Sim Funded, Pro Sim Funded.
Tradeify checks

Account type changes the buying decision

  • Recurring billing: No recurring billing or monthly subscription for current accounts. Activation fee field: $0 for current account types.
  • Trailing max drawdown: End-of-day trailing drawdown; Real-time hard breach. Hitting the Max Trailing Drawdown fails the account permanently
  • Daily Loss Limit: Soft breach. Trading pauses for the day, but the account remains active if Max Trailing Drawdown is not hit
Rapid Sim Funded Daily; 24 hours after first trade, with buffer and minimum profit required

Buffer must be cleared before standard withdrawal math is useful

Flex Sim Funded After five winning days; 25K requires $100 net profit days; 50K requires $150 net profit days

After first payout, the Max Loss Limit resets to $100

Pro Sim Funded Every 14 calendar days from first trade; Must meet the plan buffer target before requesting a payout

Withdrawal while in buffer is limited; live transition is review-based

Growth Evaluation 35% in Sim Funded

DLL: Yes; reset: Available for failed evaluations.

Select Evaluation 40% during evaluation only; no funded-mode consistency

DLL: No DLL during evaluation; reset: Available for failed evaluations.

Lightning Funded 20% first payout, 25% second payout, 30% third and later payouts

DLL: Yes, with account-size and legacy exceptions; reset: No reset option.

The buying check

Do not start with the discount. Start with the rules that can end the account, block payout access, or make a cheap account expensive after resets and data assumptions.

If the challenge still looks good after the rule checks, then compare platform fit, payout path, and account size.

The practical order

  1. Account stage and rule version.
  2. Loss-limit consequence.
  3. Consistency and payout gates.
  4. Payout rhythm and post-payout buffer.
  5. True cost after resets, activation, data, and commissions.

Core firm checks

  • Apex: check 50% consistency, qualifying-day requirements, minimum balance to request, and max payout count before buying for a payout-first path.
  • Topstep: check MLL behavior before and after first payout, including how much account balance remains above the post-payout $0 MLL assumption.
  • MyFundedFutures: check Rapid, Flex, and Pro separately because payout rhythm, buffer, minimum withdrawal, and news restrictions can change the fit.
  • Tradeify: check Growth, Select, and Lightning separately because DLL, consistency, reset availability, and true cost are account-type specific.

What this checklist does not decide

This checklist does not rank firms, activate partner recommendations, or predict payout approval. It narrows the rule checks a trader should complete before buying.
